What are Dasha Systems?

While transits (Gochar) show the current astrological "weather," Dasha systems reveal the long-term "climate." They are unique to Vedic astrology and map out which planet's energy will be most influential during specific periods of an entity's life. The Dasha system is calculated from the exact position of the Moon at the time of birth, specifically its Nakshatra.

Understanding the Dasha lord (the planet ruling the current period) is essential because it sets the stage. The transits then act upon that stage. A good Dasha period can mitigate challenging transits, while a difficult Dasha period can prevent even the best transits from yielding their full potential.

Vimshottari Dasha (The 120-Year Cycle)

This is the most important Dasha system in Jyotish. It assumes a human lifecycle of 120 years and is divided into nested sub-periods:

Mahadasha (Major Period): Lasts from 6 to 20 years. This planet is the "CEO" of your life during this time.
Antardasha (Sub-Period): Lasts from months to years. This planet is the "Manager" reporting to the CEO.
Pratyantardasha (Sub-Sub-Period): Lasts for days or weeks, used for fine-grained timing.
