What is Vedic Astrology (Jyotish)?

Vedic Astrology, known as 'Jyotish' in Sanskrit, means "the science of light." It is the traditional system of astrology from India, with roots tracing back thousands of years to ancient scriptures called the Vedas. Unlike modern interpretations, Jyotish is considered a 'Vedanga,' or a limb of the Vedas, used to understand the subtle energies and karmic patterns that influence life.

It operates on the principle that the celestial bodies in our solar system reflect a cosmic order and that their positions at the time of an entity's birth (or inception) provide a map of its inherent potential and lifecycle.

Difference Between Vedic vs. Western Astrology

The most significant difference lies in the zodiac system used.

• Zodiac System: Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, which is based on the seasons and fixes the start of Aries at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac, which is aligned with the fixed stars. Due to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, the two zodiacs are currently about 24 degrees apart. This means your Sun sign in the Western system is often different from your Sun sign in the Vedic system.
• Planetary Rulerships: Vedic astrology uses only the seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) plus two lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu). It does not use the outer planets Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto.
• Focus: Vedic astrology often places a greater emphasis on the Moon sign and the Ascendant (Lagna), as well as the concept of planetary periods (Dashas), to determine the timing of events.

Why Moon-Based Astrology is Used in This App

In Vedic astrology, the Moon represents the mind, emotions, public perception, and the general flow of life force (prana). While the Sun represents the soul or core identity and the Ascendant represents the physical body and environment, the Moon governs our day-to-day experiences and reactions.

By using the Moon sign as the primary reference point (a technique called 'Chandra Lagna'), we can gauge the "mood" or psychological climate surrounding an entity. This is particularly effective for forecasting public sentiment, market volatility, and the collective energy of a team or company, making it a powerful tool for the analysis performed by this app.

Why Vedic Astrology is Suitable for Forecasts

Vedic astrology excels at prediction due to its use of several key components that work together to create a detailed forecast:

1. Dasha Systems: These unique planetary period systems map out which planet's energy will be most influential during specific long-term and short-term periods of life, providing a timeline for when certain potentials may activate.
